Canvas - User Resolution
User Resolution is the process of linking existing Canvas Users to their School Pathways user (Students and Staff)
User Resolution is performed in each school (Scope) where your Canvas two-way integration is enabled. We recommend this process be performed frequently during the start of your school year to link students and staff to their existing accounts.
- Links existing users in Canvas to their existing School Pathways user
- Prevents duplicates- matches on name, email, ID
- Offers suggestions on partial matches when an exact match isn't found
Navigation:
Reports>External Bridging>Canvas LMS Integration Status
Permissions:
To access this page and perform any of the fuctions, users must have access to the below permission element (or added into the below security group)
Element: /canvas_lms_dashboard.php
Security Group: Canvas Administrator
Steps:
When accessing the Staff or Students tab on the Canvas status page, note any red bubbles and missing External IDs. This indicates that the users have not yet been synched with Canvas.
A new user is created upon adding them to a Canvas connected School Pathways class
Existing Canvas users have to be connected to their School Pathways counterpart.
- If you see a RED bubble next to a student or staff, then click the link for User Resolution on the top left of your screen.
- On the next screen, the defaults are set and you can change the user between staff and students as needed. Click Submit
If you added staff/students in Canvas AFTER the snapshot timestamp on the page, you will need to click the "Refresh API Snapshot" to pick up a new snapshot. Should only be necessary if you are manually adding users into Canvas.
Types of Matches:
Exact Matches: Users who match on Name, Email, ID
Example-Kacie Jester matched on name as well as the Local ID and the Canvas SIS User ID
- "Current SIS Link" column is blank=Not connected
Partial Matches: The system has found some connection between the Canvas user and the School Pathways user.
- Save to link once confirmed they are a match
On either of these two options, it is safe to check the box and link the users if everything looks good.
For Exact Matches, the boxes are checked by default, scroll down and click Accept and Continue
For Partial Matches, the checkboxes will need to be checked manually (ideally this is to ensure users are not linked by accident to the wrong user account). Once ready, click Accept and Continue
Once the users are matched, you can wait overnight for classes and grades to sync, or run an immediate push of the bridge from the main Canvas Dashboard page
