Customizing Residence Categories

In this article, you will learn how to customize Residence Categories within your system settings. This feature allows users to modify the existing categories or create new ones that map directly to CALPADS values.

Before proceeding with any modifications, it is important to understand that disabling categories may affect your school's utilization of REG-Online. Specifically, if you choose to hide a category that has already been selected by a family during the registration process and is currently marked as "awaiting import," this action will result in a change of the student status to "awaiting data."

Accessing Residence Categories:

  1. Navigate to Admin Settings:

    • Log in to your administrative dashboard.
    • Go to Admin > Settings > Residence Categories.
  2. Understanding Default Categories:

    • By default, your system is populated with pre-set residence categories.
    • These categories are currently being used across the platform, particularly in the student registration processes.

Customizing Residence Categories:

  1. Edit Existing Categories:

    • To edit a residence category:
      • Click on the category name.
      • Make the necessary changes to the label, description, or other fields.
      • Ensure the category accurately reflects CALPADS values if applicable.
    • Save your changes.
  2. Hide Unnecessary Categories:

    • If certain categories are not needed:
      • Select the category you wish to hide.
      • Toggle the visibility option to "Hidden."
    • This action will remove the category from all dropdown menus but retain it in the system for record purposes.
  3. Create New Categories:

    • To add a new residence category:
      • Click on the Add New Category button.
      • Enter the category name, description, and map it to the appropriate CALPADS value.
      • Save the new category to make it available in the dropdown options.

Impact on Registration Processes:

  • The customized residence categories will directly influence the Residence Category dropdowns in:
    • SIS Student Registration: Ensuring that the correct category is selected during the registration process.
    • REG Online: Streamlining the registration experience for both administrators and students.

Important Notes:

  • Be cautious when editing or hiding categories as these changes are system-wide and can affect data integrity.
  • Always map your categories to the correct CALPADS values to maintain compliance and accurate reporting.
